Simon Mullan

"M, Eine Hymne an die Kraft", May 6- June 6 2010

Alida Ivanov Gallery is happy to present Simon Mullan's first solo exhibition with the gallery, "M, Eine Hymne an die Kraft" (M, a Hymn to the Power").

Simon Mullan creates a world with the different faces of masculinity. He asks questions about what masculinity is and what its clichés mean both to him as well as the general public. Simon Mullan investigates what the power in being a man means; to be a man-machine, to be a man without feelings - masculinity as pure energy. He is interested in the connotations that derive from the image of the man in different archetypal characters like cowboys, brick carriers, muscle men, skinheads, and from masculine objects like cigarettes and motorcycles. They are all symbols of machismo culture with homoerotic features, and take the form of humorous narcissism in Mullan's work. With a sense of humour he moulds a fetish for rubber and the sound of machines - a desire for power through mechanical force. He puts a critical eye on his own masculinity and uses humour as a tool to investigate his relationship to what it means to be a man; this is seen in his body of work.

The exhibition consists of four films, which in different ways deal with force as a male trait, whether it is as physical or mechanical power. He also shows a series of collages and a sculpture, which is homage to the brick carriers of London in the 1960´s.

Simon Mullan was born in Kiel, Germany, 1981, but grew up in Vienna, Austria. He studied at The University of Applied Arts in Vienna, and at the Royal University College of Fine Arts in Stockholm, Sweden.
