September 6th, 2009
This Autumn Issue was originally scheduled to be released on October 1st, but I decided to move its debut date up. We will be celebrating our 2 year anniversary on October 7th, and I am quite proud of this accomplishment… I founded LP on my birthday in 2007, and have spent the last few years working on it seven days a week. I think we have all collaborated on sharing a great adventure of literary, artistic and creative achievements these past few years with each other, and with our readership. I appreciate all of you, and hope we continue to work together to create the new issues of Luciole Press.
We have a mixture of new and returning contributors for this issue. Check out the "Table of Contents" page for the really great mixture of delicious art and poetry we have on hand. We have lovely photos from autumnal Colorado (Esmaa Self and Christine McClintock), the expanse of northern Norway (from Jeaneth Patricia Skaugvold), and a mind-boggling ancient human settlement site in Bulgaria, the Deveteshka Cave (by Maya Lyubenova)… plus the third installment of Dena Rash Guzman’s photo essay of Thailand.
Gerry McCullough of Ireland sent in a riveting short story that brings all of us into the troubled time of 1988 in Ballystravey.
Pris Campbell reviews Gill O’Halloran’s new chapbook, This Seven Year Old Walks into a Bar. We have special pages for David Smith’s new book, White Time (for which I was proud to write a blurb), and Scott Wannberg’s new book, strange movie full of death. Check the “Books to Buy” page to see a link to Luciole Press contributor Tammy Foster Brewer’s new book, No Glass Allowed.
Baby the Greatest, LP’s feline advice columnist, answers a question about the ongoing healthcare reform debate in the United States.
We have poems from Aleksia Petko, David Smith, Ellyn Maybe, Erek Smith, Heather Ann Schmidt, Jason Hardung, Kumari de Silva, Scott Wannberg, and myself (plus I have a few photos on my page, including the firefly-inspired “G is for Glowbug”).
There is a wide array of artistic splendor in this issue. S.A. Griffin made a special collage for the anniversary issue (also, David Smith wrote a special blurb and Scott Wannberg wrote an anniversary riff). You can find these on their personal pages, plus the special “Luciole 2nd-Anniversary” page.
We cover the artistic and spiritually inspired work of Suzanne Gilliland, which includes paintings and clothing, and Ira Joel Haber’s collages and sketches. Emma-Jayne Saanen shares her ventures in animal portraiture, available for purchase through her new site.
Tracy Lee Stum, the Guiness World Record holder for largest street painting created by a single individual, answered some questions for LP and shared her incredible paintings in the Madonnari style.
Make sure you read the article on the clothing wonderland that is The Vintage Vulture, Andrea Folmer’s store in Orange, CA.
We have most of the previous issue’s pages available; just check the links on the “Previous Issue” page…
If somehow I left anything or anyone out, please do not hesitate to remind me to add you in to my note. I still have many emails with submissions that I am sifting through as quickly as I can.
Many of you were very supportive of my mother and I, during our recent health travails. I cannot ever tell you how much I appreciate that. Please keep us in your thoughts, with your fingers crossed, as we have a difficult month to get through to further evaluate some bad news we received about my mother’s tests in the last two weeks. I would be very grateful for some good thoughts sent our way
I hope all of you have a spectacular autumn, and enjoy this new issue. Let me know what you think, or what you would like to see in future issues!
As always,
Karen Bowles
