UN chief Ban Ki-moon gets an archery lesson at a sports festival in Bayansonginot. Expanding deserts "suffocate livelihoods and a way of life," Ban has said in Mongolia, on a visit to highlight the risks posed by desertification to one third of the world's population.

This 2006 photo shows a woman in Beijing sweeping away sand from an overnight sandstorm -- another reminder that the desert is moving closer to the Chinese capital. UN chief Ban Ki-moon said last month that an estimated 24 million people are having to flee their land due to desertification and land degradation, adding that number could rise to 200 million by 2050.
