Firefighter's Words -74- "Parts Detail"

I was working as a volunteer Paramedic in a small rural town in Southern Ohio .  It was a cool fall morning and we hadn't been very busy until we heard the call for a motor vehicle accident.  A school bus had been involved with a station wagon.  Multiple injuries - all units respond.   It took us 15 minutes to arrive on scene to a gruesome and chaotic accident.  The first thing I remember seeing was a State Trooper vomiting on the side of the road.  I knew it was bad then.

I exited the truck on the run but was stopped by another trooper who was covered in blood.  No survivors.  We were there for parts detail.  I had never been on such a grisly scene and didn't understand what he meant by ” parts detail”  until I saw a foot lying on the road.  I saw the school bus in front of what I assumed was the station wagon with the buses rear wheels still on the hood of the car.  I was informed that the bus had lost control and ran over the top of the station wagon.  As we were performing our "parts detail" and recovering the body parts (multiple victims with decapitation and torn limbs, all from the car)  another medic screamed that there was a live one in the car.  A young three yr old survived when he was thrown to the floor between the front and back seats of the car.  His mother, father, 5 yr old sister, 7 yr old brother, and aunt were all killed in the crash along with the bus driver.  He had no injuries except bumps and bruises.

I still have nightmares.  Thanks for listening though.  It still hurts to talk about but it's a lot easier when I know the listener understands.
