Gaffe-prone Sarah Palin gives Thanksgiving interview while turkeys are slaughtered in the background

Gaffe-prone Sarah Palin has given a television interview in front of a man chopping off turkey heads.

The Alaskan governor, whose election campaign was punctuated by blunders, could not resist trying something 'fun and different'.

But in perhaps her worst faux pas yet, she floundered through questions on the price of oil and the economy, while the gruesome scene over her shoulder made the unremarkable event of Thanksgiving in Alaska seem absurd.

Turkey slaughter: Sarah Palin talks about the price of oil while the gruesome scene behind her unfolds

Reporters who could see the bloody work of an employee at Triple D Farm & Hatchery in the background, asked the aspiring president what made the day so important to her.

As Mrs Palin turned her head slightly to the man shoving the turkeys down a metal death contraption, she replied: 'This was neat. I was happy to get invited to participate in this. For one, you need a bit of levity in this job.'

Mrs Palin also said she was  thankful that her son Stryker's brigade was relatively safe in Iraq, that the rest of her family was healthy and happy and she was glad to be back in Alaska.

On a Alaska political blog, one viewer of the video said: 'So typical of her to make yet one more blunder. How long is the list now?'

Mrs Palin has been the butt of jokes since she was selected by Republican presidential hopeful John McCain, to be his running mate in the 2008 U.S. elections.

More notably, she fell prey to a radio prankster who pretended to be French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

An oblivious Mrs Palin told the caller, a Canadian comedian using an over-the-top French accent, she thought the idea of a baby seal hunting expedition would be fun.

When the fake Mr Sarkozy suggested they should go hunting together by helicopter, she replied: 'Well, I think we could have a lot of fun together while we're getting work done.'

The 44-year-old hopes God will 'show her the way' on any bid for presidency in four years.

Thanksgiving is celebrated in America on the fourth Thursday of November, the traditional end to the harvest season.

Here's what readers have had to say so far. Why not add your thoughts below?

I'm trying to find something I like about her. She talks a lot but says very little. I don't understand why she would think watching her talk while he shoves turkeys into a chute is "fun and exciting".
